Wall Connector

You do not need to install a Wall Connector for home charging. You can use the Mobile Connector to plug into a standard household outlet for 2-3 mph of charge or, if you have an existing 240 V outlet that your installer approves for charging use, you can get up to 30 mph of charge.

However, the Wall Connector is our recommended home charging solution as it provides the fastest charging speed and additional functionality that is not offered by the Mobile Connector, such as other electric vehicle compatibility, scheduling and charging statistics.

If you have a standard household (120 V) outlet available at your parking spot, you can use a Mobile Connector with the included NEMA 5-15 adapter; however, you will be limited to 2-3 mph of charge, depending on the vehicle.

If you have a 240 V (dryer-type) outlet available where you park, using the Mobile Connector with one of the corresponding adapters can provide up to 30 mph of charge and may be the best solution for you as it avoids the cost of installation.

Both Wall Connector and Mobile Connector offer the same maximum charge rate (32A – up to 30 mph) for Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive and Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive.

The Wall Connector could be installed on a 40A circuit breaker (32A output), or you can install a 240 V outlet with a 50A circuit breaker (32A output) and use the Mobile Connector with the NEMA 14-50 adapter.

Regardless of charging speed, the Wall Connector may be the better option as it provides additional functionality that is not offered by the Mobile Connector, like other electric vehicle compatibility, scheduling and charging statistics.

The Universal Wall Connector is compatible with most electric vehicles in North America, both Tesla vehicles and other electric vehicles. Charging speeds vary by vehicle and available power supply.

NACS, or the North American Charging System, is Tesla's charging standard for electric vehicles and the most common charging standard in North America. The Mobile Connector and Wall Connector have NACS plugs and only work with Tesla vehicles.

J1772 is another commonly used plug type by other EV manufacturers in North America. The Universal Wall Connector has both J1772 and NACS plugs, and charges both Tesla vehicles and other electric vehicles.

Installing two Wall Connectors configured for Group Power Management would be the best option.

By following the steps for connecting a Wall Connector to local Wi-Fi, you can ensure that your Wall Connector stays up to date with over-the-air firmware updates and remote diagnostics.

Increasingly, multi-unit dwellings are required by law to allow EV charging. Additionally, incentives may be available to you or your building property manager to alleviate installation costs. Talk to your property manager about getting chargers installed.

Home charging incentives can come in several forms, including purchase and installation rebates or discounted electricity rates. Refer to your local administration or utility company for the latest incentives available to you.

We recommend plugging in every evening to top off the battery. If your utility has low, overnight electricity rates, set your charging schedule to match those off-peak times.

Charge the battery to the appropriate charge limit for your Tesla vehicle based on the installed battery. To adjust the charge limit for your vehicle, open the Charging screen on your touchscreen or in the Tesla app and drag the slider. Different batteries require different charging routines for optimal performance. Your vehicle’s touchscreen will display the recommended charge limit for your battery. For other electric vehicles, refer to your vehicle manufacturer’s guidance.

Tesla vehicle charging speeds vary by model and whether you are using a Mobile Connector or Wall Connector. Refer to your vehicle manufacturer’s guidance for charging speeds of other electric vehicles.

Yes, but only for Tesla vehicles. Charging Access Control gives you full control over which Tesla vehicles are allowed to charge with your Wall Connector. You can restrict access directly through the Tesla app under ‘Settings’ without having to resort to a physical locking device. This is also possible during the commissioning process via Tesla One.

The warranty for normal residential use of a Wall Connector covers your Wall Connector for a period of 48 months or for normal commercial use of a Wall Connector covers your Wall Connector for a period of 12 months. Mobile Connector and corresponding charging adapters have a warranty of 12 months. If Mobile Connector is included with purchase of the vehicle, the coverage period is 48 months. The coverage period begins from the date of invoice.
